A Legendary Tale
Publisher: Pubbly
Ages: 7-8

The Arabian Nights, known originally as One Thousand and One Nights, is a collection of folk tales that Scheherazade tells her husband, the Sultan, to keep him interested in her. Her husband had been married several times before, and when he got bored, he would move on to the next wife. The Arabian Nights features an example of a frame narrative —a story that is used to set up another story. Scheherazade and the Sultan are featured as characters, and we learn about them before Scheherazade begins telling a story. The frame narrative loosely connects the thousand and one tales that Scheherazade weaves together for her husband. On this particular night, she tells the tale of Sinbad the Sailor on his second voyage. These PUBBLYs have professionally produced audio and sound effects, as well as animated dialog boxes. The panels of the graphic novels are presented one or two sliding panels at a time so that readers can see and experience the story fully and to let the story unfold slowly over time. Teacher’s guides (downloadable PDFs) contain background information, vocabulary, comprehension questions, and discussion guides.
