Balto's Story
Publisher: Pubbly
Ages: 7-8

Balto’s Story is an exciting true-life adventure based on an event that took place during a cold, harsh winter in the mid-1920s. In Nome, Alaska, Dr. Curtis Welch treated patients who had symptoms similar to that of diphtheria. Diphtheria is a deadly disease that can be cured by use of a serum. Unfortunately, there was no serum in Nome. Dr. Welch sent an emergency radio telegram requesting it. A relay of dogsled teams had to carry the emergency serum through blinding snow and freezing temperatures to reach the isolated Alaskan town. Millions of people followed the treacherous journey in newspaper reports and on the radio. Balto was the lead dog on the last leg. He became a national hero. These PUBBLYs have professionally produced audio and sound effects, as well as animated dialog boxes. The panels of the graphic novels are presented one or two sliding panels at a time so that readers can see and experience the story fully and to let the story unfold slowly over time. Teacher’s guides (downloadable PDFs) contain background information, vocabulary, comprehension questions, and discussion guides.
