Classic Literature Graphic Novels
Mary Shelley
Publisher: Pubbly
Type: Pubbly Animated Graphic Novel
Ages: 7-8

Frankenstein is a classic gothic horror tale considered by many to be the first science-fiction novel. The idea for the story came to its author, 18-year-old Mary Shelley, during a rainy summer spent at the villa of the famous poet Lord Byron. Inspired by a “waking dream,” Shelley penned the tale after Lord Byron challenged his guests to think of a ghost story as part of a friendly competition. The story is told through a frame narrative, or “a story in a story.” It begins with a series of letters written by Captain Robert Walton as he attempts to make it to the North Pole. The story shifts in its point of view when the Captain rescues an exhausted Doctor Victor Frankenstein from certain doom. While recovering, the doctor shares the story of his creation and the events that led to their arrival in this dangerous land. The story’s point of view then shifts back to Captain Walton and his own surprising encounter. This selection is fully animated! These PUBBLYs have professionally produced audio and sound effects, as well as animated dialog boxes. The panels of the graphic novels are presented one or two sliding panels at a time so that readers can see and experience the story fully and to let the story unfold slowly over time. Teacher’s guides (downloadable PDFs) contain background information, vocabulary, comprehension questions, and discussion guides.
